Celebrating the life of

Thomas Andrew Davis

July 21, 1935 - May 27, 2021

Thomas Andrew Davis

Thomas Andrew Davis passed away on Thursday, May 27, 2021.

Born on July 21, 1935 in Macon, GA, Tom was one of two children born to the late Wallace McCroan Davis, Sr., and Thelma Helwagen Davis. He graduated from Savannah High School in 1953 before attending the Georgia Institute of Technology where he graduated in 1957. On August 10, 1957, Tom married Dorothy “Dotty” Carolyn Baxley who remained the love of his life for more than 64 years. In 1958, Tom attended the Infantry Officer’s Basic Training School at Fort Benning where he would graduate ranked fourth in his class of 179 officers; this ranking earned him the designation of “Distinguished Military Graduate”.  Tom then attended the Parachutist Jump School at Fort Benning where he earned the Parachutist Badge. Tom spent the following eight years in the United States Army Infantry Reserve.

In 1958, he went to work with his father who had started a wholesale plumbing and industrial supply business named Davis Supply Company. In 1955, Tom purchased Davis Supply Company from his father, and subsequently opened branches in Beaufort, SC, Hilton Head, SC, Vidalia, and Brunswick.

Tom was approached by Apex Supply Company of Atlanta to sell Davis Supply Company, at that time Apex Supply was in the process of negotiating the sale of Apex Supply to Home Depot.

Davis Supply Company ended up as a part of Home Depot where Tom spent five years in a consulting capacity.

Tom had great pride in having been a charter member of the German Heritage Society as well as President of that Society from 2008 to 2010. Tom was a member of the Downtown Rotary Club of Savannah for over 50 years.

Tom was a devoted gardener; over many years he volunteered his time and money to the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens where he and his wife Dotty donated the Formal Garden as well as the White Garden. Tom and Dotty had the garden of their home at The Landings on tour on three different occasions. Tom was very proud of his Horticulture skills. He also was a proud supporter of the Georgia Historical Society, the United Way, and the Telfair Museum.

Tom is survived by his wife, Dorothy Baxley Davis, daughter, Carol (Mike) Warren of Atlanta, GA, son, Tommy (Kristina) Davis of Savannah, five grandchildren, Baxley (Phil) Costabile, Jimmy (Kathryn) Warren, Hanna Davis, Amanda Stephens, and Christopher Stephens.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 3, 2021 at Isle of Hope United Methodist Church.

GUEST BOOK

It has been a long time since I last saw Tom which was at a Georgia Tech meeting. We both graduated from SHS and GT and were in the same Sunday School class at Wesley. May God comfort you at this time.

- BROUGHTON RONEY Kelly, SAVANNAH, GA

Tom Davis is largely responsible for much of the positive trajectory of my life. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to go to his home and tell him this and other ways he influenced my life. He and Dotty were there when I was a raw seed, and the difference in growing into a weed or a flower was made when our paths crossed. I am thankful God allowed our paths to cross. One day, our path won't cross again....It will be one. One that we get to walk with the Savior in whose arms Tom now awaits the arrival of all of us who better for having him in our lives.

- Rick Monroe, Savannah, GA

Dear Dottie Thinking of you and your family. Love and prayers to all of you. Ruthie

I am so sorry to learn of Tom's passing. He was a great person and will be sorely missed. While I had not spoken to Tom and Dotty in latter years he was a big influence in my personal life and profession. I worked for Tom for a while and he was an astute businessman who taught me a lot about business. That business acumen was instrumental when launching my professional career.

Tom and Dottie were influential in our joining Isle of Hope UMC. The Christian example they lived by was an inspiration to any that met them. Tom was a humble and kind man that I looked forward to seeing at church. He knew Jesus Christ and shared that enthusiasm. Dottie and family...you know his final destination and will share in that glory one day. Tom... God Speed my friend

Dotty, you know how much your Tom meant to both Paul and me. We treasured the many years and memories we have shared. Paul especially loved their lunches when Tom would reminisce about Paul Sr. and the many fun things they woule recall. I will always remember and cherish how dear he was as we traveled down the journey together finding a wonderful buyer for 3 Sedgewater that would cherish his gorgeous gardens. He must have thanked me a dozen times. And I am thrilled he was already attached to 13 Isle of Pines and I know he is looking down and happy you are in such a special place. We will all miss him terribly but will always keep the great memories he gave us close to our hearts! Love you Dotty!!!!

Dotty, We were saddened to hear of Tom's passing. He was such a sweet and caring man and we thoroughly enjoyed seeing him and getting to know him at Sunday School. I will never forget how his eyes would light up when we talked about Pepper and the crazy things she would do. From the first time we met Pepper he always said she was an active one. He loved talking to us about her. We will miss him terribly but we know he is in the arms of Jesus. May God comfort you at this time. We love you Dotty.

Tom was such a warm, kind man. Our family ties go back to the founding of the German Heritage Society where he and my father were co founders. They later enjoyed a business relationship where Tom was so very helpful. I became connected with Tom at Rotary, the Georgia Historical Society and at the German Heritage Society. It was truly an honor to serve on the German Heritage Society board with him. Auf Wiedersehen good friend.

So sorry for your loss Tommy and family. I met Mr Davis in the mid 80s as I entered the plumbing profession. I will never forget his generosity, compassion, and humor. He always treated me like i was someone special, I will never forget the many golf outings that he made me a part of.

- Davey McGill, Ridgeland, SC

Dear Mrs. Davis, Your great loss is shared by the many people Tom shepherded in life, I among them. As a new Rotarian years ago, from our shared lunch at the DeSoto to the last occasion I saw him, he offered his wisdom, circumspection and impeccable manner with such generosity. Women's role at that time was not nearly as large as it has become but Tom enthusiastically embraced diverse leadership and boosted my confidence. When I was elected the first female president of our Club, he anonymously (others spilled the beans) made me a Porter Pierpont Fellow, something I have never forgotten. The world is blessed with many good men and none better than Tom Davis. I treasure having known him. All my warmest regards, Louisa Abbot
